What do I need for my pet hermit crabs?
Once you have decided that you want to have hermit crabs as pets, you want to make sure you have everything they need before bringing them home. Below is a care sheet listing all the items needed to create a perfect home and everything required to keep your pets happy, healthy, and well fed.
Habitat
A 10 gallon aquarium or terrarium with screened lid. A larger tank is needed for more than several crabs.
An under-tank heating pad to keep your pets warm.
Hermit crab or reptile sand or a combination of sand and Eco-earth as a substrate. There should be enough substrate for your hermit crabs to completely bury themselves.
A variety of decor for climbing. Caves, half logs, branches, driftwood, or other decorations.
A water dish for fresh water and a water dish for salt water.
A spray bottle for misting the tank with warm chlorine free water.
Multiple food bowls to make sure everyone gets enough food.
Multiple hermit crab shells of various sizes. Only use unpainted natural shells without cracks or holes.
Food, Treats & Supplements
Commercial crab food as the primary source of food.
A variety of crab treats that you can offer your pets. Commercial treats, fruits, vegetables, popcorn, insects, and many other foods can be used as treats.
Fresh chlorine free drinking water.
Hermit crab sea salts to make salt water for your pets.
